What is a SHPN RD?

A SCAN dietitian is a Registered Dietitian (RD) with training, expertise and an unmistakable passion for working in one or more of the following areas:

    • Sports performance
    • Cardiovascular health
    • Wellness & Wellbeing

As registered dietitians, we have met educational requirements set by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education (CADE) of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

    All Registered Dietitians:

Have completed a bachelor's degree at an accredited university or college with course work approved by CADE

Have completed a CADE-accredited supervised practice program (6 to 12 month internship)

    Have passed a national examination

Must complete complete continuing professional educational requirements to maintain registered status on an ongoing basis (similar to other medical professionals)

In addition, SCAN dietitians typically have unique skills and professional experience that cover three distinct but related nutritional specialties. Sports dietitians specialize in working with high school and collegiate athletes, Olympians, and professional sports teams. Cardiovascular dietitians work with patients in preventive cardiology and cardiovscular rehabilitation. Wellness dietitians work with patients on the many areas of wellness and wellbeing including weight management, and health and wellness coaching. Many have specialized training in their area(s) of interest, such as being a Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE), Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC) or Board Certified as a Specialist in Sports Dietetics (CSSD).

As the true experts, SCAN dietitians use their knowledge and expertise in a comprehensive approach and in a wide variety of settings every day.
